Greenstar provides a total of 19 products and services
through the Greenstar Network of private healthcare
providers, comprising of female and male doctors,
female paramedics, and pharmacists and also through
non-Greenstar outlets, comprising pharmacies, retail
outlets and clinics providing non-surgical services.
Sathi Condoms:
In 1986, Greenstar introduced it’s flagship
brand - Sathi Condom that enjoys a market share of
70 percent. In Pakistan condoms are the most widely
used reversible method, Sathi's share of the condom
market means that it alone provides a significant
proportion of Pakistan's total contraceptive prevalence.
Priced at approximately just under $0.2 per condom,
and are available at over 45,000 retail outlets across
the country, Sathi are the most affordable condoms
in Pakistan,
Touch Condoms:
In 1996, Greenstar launched a second, upscale
brand of condom - Touch. This brand has strengthened
due to two line extensions in 2003, Touch Ribbed and
Touch Dotted condoms. Cumulative first year sales
for both line extensions was just under 2 million.
Touch is being targeted to high risk groups for disease
prevention. In 2003, Touch range sales rose to over
10 million condoms per year, more than the combined
condom distribution of all other NGOs in the country,
and more than any other commercial brand in Pakistan
except Sathi.
Hormonal Contraceptives:
Historically, hormonal contraceptive use has been
very low in Pakistan. Since the advent of hormonal
contraceptive social marketing, oral and injectable
contraceptive use has risen consistently however,
by international standards use still remains low,
at 1.9 percent and 2.5 percent respectively.
In 1996, Greenstar developed two hormonal brands especially
for Pakistan, Nova-Oral and Nova-Ject injectable,
both priced to be affordable for the low-income couples.
Nova is sold both as a single cycle and in an economy
pack of 3 cycles. Two more hormonal pill brands Microgynon
and Lo-Feminal have also been sold by Greenstar during
periods of Nova stockouts. Total pill sales have equaled
over 7.8 million cycles to date.
2003 saw the launch of Megestron, a three-month injectable,
to provide safe, effective and convenient contraceptive
cover for women desiring long-term spacing. It is
the most popular injectable formulation used in the
world with an estimated 10 million women users.
Femi-ject, the first combined estrogen-progesterone
injectable formulation was launched in 2004 in Pakistan.
The unique feature of this injection is that it provides
the same efficacy and patient response as the oral
contraceptive pill without the daily pill hassle.
Femi-Ject is a one-month injectable which has excellent
patient compliance and minimal side-effects.
Greenstar is the only healthcare organization in Pakistan
to offer the complete range of injectable contraceptives.
This has allowed service providers a wider range of
products to offer their clients based on their contraceptive
needs. To date, the combined injectable sales is over
1.7 million injections.
Hormonal contraceptives available through the Greenstar
private sector providers and via non-Greenstar providers
and pharmacies, by its own field force of medical
representatives and a pharmaceutical distributor.
Vitalet:
A multivitamin supplement Vitalet was launched in
2000 as a pilot project under the Health Plus project.
It contains iron, zinc, vitamin A and other key micronutrients.
The project is currently operational in two cities
Rawalpindi/Islamabad and Peshawar. The objective of
the project is to improve the quality of life of low-income
women by improving their nutritional status especially
vis-a-vis iron deficiency anemia thereby improving
their health as well as the health of their babies.
Total sales to date is over 278,000 packs.
Sehat Wali Gari:
To provide health services to underserved women and
children, the Sehat Wali Gari (Mobile Health Van)
was launched in 2000 as a fully equipped mobile health
van which provides highly subsidized general and reproductive
health care in identified underserved communities.
The mobile van is in the field every day working in
remote areas providing services to the people who
are unable to access health care services.
Currently only one van operates in Karachi, however,
two more vans have been sanctioned for underserved
populations in and around Islamabad and Lahore. Greenstar
intends to extend its reach to rural populations through
these efforts.
VSC:
Female Voluntary Surgical Contraception (VSC) was
started through the Greenstar Plus clinics in 2001.
VSC or contraceptive sterilization has become the
most widely used method of family planning in the
world. It is the most effective method for either
the man or woman, intended to be permanent. It is
also the safest and most economical contraceptive
method. Over 9,000 surgeries have been performed to
date.
Clean Delivery Kit:
To improve family health, Greenstar launched a new
initiative in 2003, the Clean Delivery Kit, which
is a pre-packaged disposable delivery kit which provides
a mix of clean objects for cleaner and safer deliveries
at homes. The Kit helps reduce the chances of tetanus,
neo-natal and maternal sepsis which occur during delivery.
In a country where 77 percent of all births take place
at home, and where neo-natal and maternal sepsis are
among the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality,
the Clean Delivery Kit provides a cleaner option for
home deliveries and creates awareness of the benefits
of a clean and healthy delivery among TBAs (Traditional
Birth Attendants) and married women.
EC:
In 2003, Greenstar launched the first socially marketed
emergency contraceptive pill, EC, which is indicated
for the prevention of unplanned pregnancies in event
of unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure
i.e. condom burst, displaced/expelled IUD, missed
dosage of OC or injectable and/or rape. It is highly
effective, safe and reliable with up to 95 percent
efficacy if used correctly. Since its launch, 386,000
packs of EC have been sold to providers and chemists.
Malaria Prevention Pilot:
As part of the Government of Pakistan’s National
Malaria Strategic Plan, Greenstar received funding
from The Global Fund - GFATM, in early 2004, to initiate
a pilot project to social market ITNs (Insecticide
Treated Nets) in four high-risk malaria districts
(Karachi, Hyderabad, Lasbela and Muzzafargarh). The
project will target those at highest risk –
pregnant women and children under 5 years –
and builds upon a small scale trial of ITNs conducted
in 2000 in three rural villages which demonstrated
a significant reduction in morbidity and a high acceptance
of nets. The project is the first social marketing
effort of its kind in Pakistan.
Other services provided through the Greenstar health
care providers include:
• Ante-natal care
• Post-natal care
• STI Management
• Post abortion care
• Newly Wed Counseling
BABY ACTIVE:
More than 60% of infants 6-24 months in Pakistan suffer
from iron deficiency anemia. Proper iron intake is
more important during infancy (6-24 months) than any
other stage of life, and anemia during infancy results
in poor cognitive & delayed motor development
(which may not be reversible) & decrease resistance
to illness & disease. Globally, iron deficiency
in the 6-24 months age group is impairing the mental
development of 40-60% of the developing world’s
children. In Pakistan, infants 6-24 months are traditionally
weaned on a low nutrition, starch based porridge,
without the diversity of iron rich foods (mostly meat)
needed to prevent anemia. In fact, worldwide it is
difficult for dietary sources alone to provide the
iron an infant needs-hence Gerber rice, wheat, corn,
infant cereals- with iron. For decades, giving infants
iron drops was the intervention to treat & prevent
infant & child anemia. However, compliance has
always been low due to bad taste, teeth staining,
& inconvenience for parents to administer.
Baby Active is composed of encapsulated iron granules,
to masks the metallic taste of the iron, plus other
micronutrients (Vit A, C,D, zinc, folic) that enhance
iron absorptions & as well as address other iron
deficiencies. Baby Active is easy to use by simply
mixing into infant’s weaning porridge. They
do not affect the color, taste or smell of the food.
It’s launched at a highly affordable price of
Rs.2 per sachet.
PUR
Globally, Diarrheal diseases leads to an estimated
4 billion cases every year
