On October 8th 2005 a devastating earthquake registered 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Kashmir, Northern Areas and the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan and killed an estimated 80,000 people and made 4 million homeless, four times the victims of disastrous Asian Tsunami.
Immediately after the October 2005 earthquake hit Pakistan, Greenstar with the help of PSI introduced PuR to survivors. Working with UNICEF and other key partners, Greenstar has distributed more than 7 million PuR sachets – enough to treat 70 million liters of water, supplying an estimated 70,000 families. Communication and monitoring campaigns continue to be conducted among partners and communities on proper use of PuR and the importance of safe water and sanitation. Working with UNFPA, Greenstar is reaching women in need with reproductive health products and services. In addition, Greenstar is working to help 100 private health providers rebuild their services in affected areas.

GoodLife Clinics

Greenstar Social Marketing Pakistan (Guarantee) Limited, with it’s sister concern GoodLife, plans to provide health facilities to the earthquake affected region by establishing eighty health clinics. GoodLife therefore plans to design, construct and operate forty clinics each in AJK and NWFP region of Pakistan.

Two such prefabricated clinics have been built in NWFP. Through these clinics, GoodLife and Greenstar will help reduce maternal, neonatal, and child mortality among low-income populations in Pakistan. By delivering family planning in the context of family health, GL clinics will help improve FP access and use among the more conservative, rural and underserved; improved overall reach and efficiency; and accommodate all health program funds with economies of scale.
